Lexus does have plug-in hybrid models the NX 450h+ and RX 450h+. The luxury SUVs provide a blend of performance and the upscale driving experience expected from Lexus. Each model excels at catering to different needs. Before we discuss the features of each one, let’s go over the differences between Hybrid, EV and PHEV.

Understanding Hybrid, EV, and PHEV

What defines a Hybrid Vehicle?

  • Combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor.
  • The electric motor assists the gasoline engine to improve fuel efficiency.
  • The battery is charged through regenerative braking and the gasoline engine.
  • There is no plug in.

Electric Vehicle (EV):

  • Powered solely by an electric motor, you never add traditional fuel.
  • Requires plugging into an electric power source to recharge the battery.
  • Produces zero emissions.
  • Limited by the range the battery can provide before needing a recharge.

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV):

  • Combines a gasoline engine with a larger electric motor and battery than a standard hybrid.
  • Can be plugged in to charge the battery.
  • Capable of driving on electric power alone for a limited range before the gasoline engine is needed.
  • The driver has control over electric and gas modes.
