What is the history of The Fred (Frederick Brown Jr Ampitheatre)?
The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, more affectionately known as “The Fred,” is Peachtree City’s go-to venue for attending outdoor concerts. This outdoor amphitheater first started hosting concerts specifically for senior citizens and soon after that, local theater groups and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra started using it for their performances. And now, The Fred is known for having some of the most classic talents ever to grace it’s stage with the summer concert series. The summer concert series includes a variety of talented artists like 38 Special, Boz Scaggs and Ann Wilson from Heart. The series regularly attracts attendance of up to 2500 people.
Fans can access The Fred, which features a variety of seating options including tables, theater-style seating, and lawn seating, via an old-fashioned path that winds through the woods. The open-air venue that is nestled in the Georgia pines is a popular destination for fans who want to see up-and-coming performers in addition to national and international touring acts. The venue provides music fans with a concert experience that is more personal and distinctive than any other venue in the greater Atlanta area.
How did The Fred get its start?
More than forty years ago, the McIntosh Trail Arts Council gave the go-ahead for the construction of an outdoor venue with seating for 1,600 people so that they could perform a play titled “The McIntosh Trail.” The play was produced for the first time in the summer of 1976 and was written by Dr. Kermit H. Hunter. It told the story of the tragic death of Chief William McIntosh. The venue was reopened in 1977 under the name “McIntosh Amphitheater” after the City of Peachtree City had purchased the facility and given it new ownership. The following decade would see the McIntosh Amphitheater serve as the venue for the weekly McIntosh Opry, which featured country and bluegrass music as well as clogging performances by local and regional artists.
In 1986, an expansion of the program was made to include performances by bands playing “oldies” music, in addition to ongoing appearances by the Atlanta Pops Orchestra. In 1989, a fire caused tragic damage to the facility, which resulted in the venue being closed for several years.
In 1991, following completion of facility renovations, the amphitheater was reopened to the public under its new name, the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater. Fans affectionately refer to the venue as “The Fred,” after the former mayor of Peachtree City, Frederick Brown Jr., who was honored for his numerous contributions to the community when the venue was named after him.
